What is Amateur Radio?

Amateur radio, or ham radio, is a licensed hobby where people use radio frequencies to communicate, explore technology, and serve their communities. Hams do many things, including:

🌍

Talking with others locally and around the world

📡

Learning about electronics, antennas, and radio theory

🎈

Building equipment and launching high-altitude balloons

🏆

Competing in contests and using digital modes and satellites

🚨

Supporting emergency communications during disasters

It's a hands-on, creative hobby that connects people through technology, curiosity, and public service.

Why Get Licensed?

A license is required to operate on amateur radio frequencies in Canada. The process ensures you understand the rules, technical aspects, and safety practices necessary for responsible operation.

Getting your amateur radio license gives you access to some of the most powerful radios, a broad range of frequencies, and the ability to communicate with other licensed operators across the country and the world.
